On Friday, June 20th, a huge dream of both Matt and mine came true. We traveled south of Auckland to a small town called Matamata, where the movie set for Hobbiton is! This is the same location for Hobbiton from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it was completely rebuilt for the Hobbit trilogy to be more permanent. Our tour was at 11am, we arrived around 10:30 so we got some tea and muffins from the cafe, then departed for our two hour tour as planned at 11. At around 12:30 the tour ends at The Green Dragon Inn with ale and cider :)
We could have hung out at the green dragon all day. If only they served lunch! Or more than one drink! Unfortunately, they don't want anyone getting drunk so you only get one brew. It is of course a special brew only served at the inn. The decor was great and we were definitely inspired to drink a lot and sing songs. Hobbiton is an extensive movie set and tour. I highly recommend it if you are ever in New Zealand. The drive was not bad at all, about 2 hours from Auckland. There are buses from Auckland if you don't want to drive on your own, but these tours are later in the day and we wanted to get there early and really savor some good sunshine in the Shire.
After our tour was over, we headed back to the cafe at the beginning of the tour, and had lunch. All of the food served in the cafe comes from the veggie gardens in Hobbiton! It was so awesome! We had an amazing time and were pretty emotional when we left. Tolkien's books were both a huge part of our childhood's and seeing the world of hobbits brought to life was truly magical. Seeing the movies I never imagined I would ever make it to New Zealand to see any of the beautiful locations. There is no other place in the world that could capture Middle Earth better than New Zealand. Incredible movies and so much work and fine detail done by Peter Jackson and his crew to bring Tolkien's world to life. I'm so thankful! We have unofficially decided to go back at least one more time before we leave NZ :) So, until next time, Hobbiton!
